Spring: Balloon Sleeves

I could never complain about a slow week; zero assignments, papers, exams etc. After two midterms on Monday, the last for my degree (YAY!), you can imagine I was ready to sit back for the rest of the week. So instead I have spent the past week doing all but academic work; exploring, creating, visiting, and now – writing. I am also forever grateful to those who have taken the time this week to listen, contribute to, and support my ideas, crazy as they may be.

Continuing with the Spring Trends series, today’s trend, balloon sleeves, has me feeling “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Aunt Vivian” vibes. Although I cannot deny that Aunt Viv along with all the ladies of FPOB definitely made waves with their style in the 90s, balloon sleeves actually date back to the Victorian Era. Both women of nobility and those of lesser social status (although less flamboyantly dressed) wore the style in different ways.

I was not at all surprised to see balloon sleeves become popular this season after the re-emergence of trumpet sleeves last spring/summer. They both create the same exaggerated effect on a plain top or dress. The balloon sleeve with its historical feel works well for going-out type events but with the risk of looking more conservative than usual. I believe that the right pick of well tailored bottoms and basic shoes will balance out the traditional sleeve style so you won’t be teetering on any extremes.

I paired the green top with a statement neck piece to keep attention on the top half where the details of the sleeves are prominent. A basic black pant with heels balances the Victorian style and easily allows the look to remain sharp and classy when you’re out on the streets. I also included my favourite saddle bag for a bit of color-blocking action – nam’ sayin ?

Top – H&M | Pants – H&M |Duster – ZARA | Shoes – Aldo | Saddle bag  – Matt + Nat

Thanks for tuning in! I’ll see you back here next week

xx
