21 Lessons I Learned in 21 Years

The year is officially twenty-five percent completed and at this point most people pause to analyze what they have accomplished thus far. Are you on track with your goals? Have you learned much? and how have you grown? are common questions used to measure progress. I personally use self-reflection as a way to make self-discoveries – sort of like therapy.

I take some time to look back at events that have taken place, what I liked and didn’t like, how I could have acted differently or chosen otherwise, as well as  positive habits and rituals that I may carry forward. In this post, I have compiled 21 lessons I learned in 21 years of reflecting. Albeit most of them occurred within the past 6 years I think that my younger self would have appreciated the heads up on life. In case you were wondering, no – my birthday is not till June, but turning 21 in 2017 was another stepping stone towards my vision of the woman I hope to become. Without further ado, here are 21 things I have learned in 21 years:

  1. Dwelling on the negative past really doesn’t help anyone.
  2. Knowing your limit with regards to everything will help avoid contempt and later regrets.
  3. It is okay to say no to favours, opportunities, events, etc., not everything is meant for you.
  4. There will come many times where you feel lost, empty and without purpose – everything will be fine.
  5. Research may not be your cup of tea, but it will help you go places if you find a topic you are interested in.
  6. People appreciate others who hear, then listen, then empathize with them.
  7. Being brave is not the absence of fear, but the ability to acknowledge that fear, square up, and overcome it.
  8. Having expectations is a good thing, but make them realistic!
  9. Sisters are your first best-friends.
  10. Trust and have confidence in the skills and abilities you’ve spent years building.
  11. You and you alone are responsible for your own happiness so seek ways to bring positivity into your life.
  12. Exclusivity sucks! – inclusivity is key.
  13. Frozen dinners are not a crime.
  14. Compliments should be given as frequently as you give your name.
  15. Your path in life is unique and God’s time is best.
  16. You most definitely can have a good time while sober.
  17. A clean room equals a clear mental space.
  18. Team Fitfam is not exclusive, your membership depends on you.
  19. The best time to start is now.
  20. If all else fails, call Mommy.
  21. Pray.

Currently sitting in The Tea Girl, I can say with all certainty that I am not done learning, not at all. I have yet to see more of the world, meet more people, go more places and do many many more things. The first quarter of the year has been a thrilling ride but there is still a long road ahead. An important part of setting goals is setting time aside to celebrate them – those you’ve accomplished, those you had the courage to attempt, and even the fact that you had the privilege to create such phenomenal goals.

I leave you with one of my favourite quotes from an unknown author;

Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire

Here’s to the rest of 2018 and lessons we are yet to learn.

xx
