Faux Shearling Jacket

All in-class hours for undergrad are completed as of yesterday and let me tell you there is no greater feeling! Besides the studying and final exams ahead, the future I daresay is looking very bright and stress free. The weather is another story.  During one of my last classes my professor mentioned that yes, they would allow us graduate even though it clearly looked like January outside – I thought ‘Is that even a question?’ There is no force like the undergraduate student in the final moments of that BSc. Moving on to the real story for today, my faux shearling jacket.

You either hate or love the all-black-everything look but in this weather some partiality towards it might just save your life. Especially in the apparent absence of spring I’m down to absorb as much of the sun’s radiation as possible and on this day it was very much needed. This all black super spy look features your classic pair of heeled faux leather boots and a faux Shearling Jacket. The latter is a replica of the Acne Studios Velocite jacket which is by no means student-coin friendly. I purchased this from Zara after MONTHS of deliberation and watching it go out of stock several times, at a fraction of the price of the original Acne.

But is this jacket really worth your coin? Let’s weigh the pros and cons.

It is without a doubt a very trendy and timeless piece that will still be wearable for years to come. Think of your basic leather jacket that you can always throw over a plain t-shirt to dress it up. The Zara Shearling jacket is exactly that with the boujee touch of the faux shearling wool. I find that it gives a bulky look when zipped up. It is also heavy relative to a regular wool or trench coat of the same size and structure which would be a struggle to carry around if you were not wearing it.

Moving on to the details of the design. The collar area is to be expected of a moto jacket with the zipper overlaying the fabric on the left side. Similar to the Acne Velocite jacket, a functional belt runs along the bottom but hangs semi-awkwardly if you wear the jacket open like I do, or can’t be bothered to fasten it. My one issue with the detailing is the absence of the belt around each sleeve cuff. It is minor and honestly not a glaring omission unless you are familiar with the original, however similar jackets carried by other brands incorporate the belted cuffs.

Another positive to this jacket is the beautiful, soft faux shearling wool that lines the interior. It is incredibly warm and feels great on the skin. This detail appears on the exterior of the jacket in the collar region, on the bottom trim of the jacket and sleeves. Despite the extent of the lining I would not pick this for seriously cold weather without considering how to warm my lower body, hands and head. There are pockets on the jacket but they are small and painful to get into as the zipper is very scratchy.

All in all I do believe it is a splurge rather than a must-have because the price tag does not fit the simplicity of the coat. I have found wool coats that keep more of the body warm by length and even layering for less than half the price of this shearling Jacket. It is perfect for dressing up on a cold night, but make sure your destination has a secure coat-check. You neither want to carry it around all night nor lose it.

Bisous.
