Catching Autumn Feels

Hello my friend and happy end of October! If your feet aren’t crunching through leaves as you walk through the streets, are you REALLY in the best season of the year? Every pastry and hot beverage on the market is in one way or another pumpkin related, but in case you didn’t get the 411, we are currently in my favourite season of all time!

Fall or Autumn, whichever you please (I reserve the right to both as I was British-elementary-schooled), is not just a blend of crispy leaves, even more crispy breeze and pumpkin scones at Starbucks (I’m just not that into PSLs). When it comes to fall fashion, the most unique pieces can be blended with basics, to create your ideal look.

A couple of my favourites? Let’s start with God’s gift to fall fashionistas – scarves (say it louder for da people in da back!). I like to believe that scarves were created for a special purpose, whether its an oversized/blanket scarf, a pashmina, or infinity. You can never go wrong with a few basic coloured pieces that will complement your look, oh and then they keep you warm of course, but you didn’t come all the way over here for me to tell you that! I personally love the collections from Aritzia and Oak+Fort (pictured).

If I didn’t mention fall coats I’d probably have to take a seat waaaaay in the back. A staple during colder weather, coats are another way to make a statement through the fall – although quite a bit more expensive. My advice? keep a few versatile colours (black, grey, camel, army green, or navy blue) in styles you enjoy (long, short, waterfall, trench, kimono etc) but that are of course high quality (we can’t have you breaking the bank each season). These will pull you through each fall season, and you can then save up and snag special pieces here and there. Larger, oversized coats are great for layering, which will increase the combinations  you can create with just one coat. I am a fan of Zara coats as they come in the most neutral yet ideal colours, and Oak+Fort (grey kimono pictured) carries a distinguished range as well.

I will shamelessly admit that I’m one of those who hangs on to summer-esque footwear even in minus-degree weather (okay, please understand the exaggeration there, but let me continue) but for the sake of a fall outfit that bangs (and to avoid looking like my body parts are in different seasons) booties and boots regularly make an appearance. Perhaps it is the lack of ease in pulling them on and off, regardless, a combination of booties, knee high boots, and regular boots are a must-have in any stylish fall wardrobe. I prefer boots without a heel however every now and then there comes a time for the classic Steve Madden over-the-knee, or Aldo open-toe booties (pictured).

Lastly, my favourite way to make a statement with fall fashion is to incorporate an item that does simply that – makes a statement. This could be through colour, print, texture or design. In this post I selected this bright yellow Zara purse, I love the way it enhances the aesthetic of the white to black gradient of everything else. An ideal way to create a statement piece is with jewelry and accessories. Statement pieces are meant to draw attention, and when others compliment your statement piece before moving on to other items, you know you’ve picked a winner!
