Hello my dear readers, and many thanks for tuning in, I trust you are all doing well. One of my favourite things to do is to try out different dining locations within my city, particularly foods from different cultures. Last week I visited Cafe Mosaics with my dear friend and fellow blogger Jasmine of Feganblog, a small vegan restaurant along a very busy road. If you know me, alarm bells should be going off at “vegan” because if we are being honest, “lover of all things steak/beef, chicken and salmon” is the highlight of my bio! So why did I drop coin on a vegan diner? Keep reading to find out!
The vegan lifestyle had never really appealed to me for several reasons. Primarily, being a Nigerian, every cultural dish especially soup is packed with an assorted variety of meat or fish and in fact if anyone served you jollof rice without fried chicken, stewed meat or fried fish, you have the right to end that friendship (or at least demote them to acquaintance)!
Cafe Mosaics although small was thoroughly enjoyable, and the atmosphere was quite relaxed. I loved the signage as well as the rustic/wood decor they had set up. The service was lovely, and the waitress we had was very welcoming.
I started my meal with a brightly coloured smoothie with strawberries and beetroot, and also had a teriyaki tofu wrap with wild rice and hash browns, and a side of Mexican-style bean salad. It was reasonably priced, however this vegan option had a few too many flavours for my liking. I often find that vegan meals compensate for the lack of meat by adding flavour and exotic spices.
On that same note, there are some incredible benefits to a vegan lifestyle, including:
- lower risk of health conditions (obesity, cardiovascular disease and some cancers)
- decreased environmental stress and unnecessary depletion of natural resources
- increased awareness of animal protection and ethic
- meat is expensive, save your student coin! (applicable to university students like myself)
Support for veganism has been highlighted in mainstream culture, and vegan food bloggers are becoming more well-known for their recipes. My all time favourite vegan foodie would have to be Youtuber avantgardevegan, whose out-of-this-world aesthetics are matched by his creative and delicious recipes. Even though I am not vegan or looking to convert to a fully vegan lifestyle, I would say incorporating vegan recipes and meals meets the cause halfway. Be sure to check out the photos below, as well as Jasmine’s blog for our nearly-there vegan indulgences!
Thank you for tuning in once again, see you in my next post!
